Berkshires Best Dance Company

The Arts and Cannabis

Artistic expression and cannabis use have been in a passionate relationship for longer than anybody can accurately remember. Funkadelic famously said, “free your mind and your ass will follow”, and I think that is a pretty enlightened statement. Ganja has been the organic muse for centuries of interpretive dance, literary masterpieces, heartfelt blues, driving reggae, improvisational jazz, acid rock, graphic arts, and intricate sculpting, along with anything else that showcases or moves the human spirit. Weed and creativity have probably shuffled hand-in-hand since the first drum circles and cave paintings. The more times change, the more things stay the same.

Local Dance Ensemble

The cannabis in Berkshire County is world class, as are the members of our local fine arts community. Besides outstanding museums and traditional concert venues, Becket also hosts a hidden gem called Jacobs Pillow Performing Arts Center. Jacobs Pillow was awarded the National Medal of Arts by then-President Obama in 2010 for its ongoing and significant contributions to the international world of dance through its performances, educational programs, and community outreach. Dancers, musicians, and artists from all around the globe have been coming to the Pillow since its inception in 1931.

Dance Education and Outreach at the Pillow

The School at Jacob’s Pillow is a pivotal experience for dance artists to define and develop their distinct artistic voices and form the career-building connections that can best distinguish and advance their work in the field. Jacobs Pillow has classes and workshops for all ages, all interests, all levels of dance. They have one or two week programs for the advanced performer in everything from contemporary ballet to tap to freestyle jazz, starting in mid June. Weekdays all through the summer they have hour long morning classes for basic dance and body movement open to ages 16 and up. On select Sundays, they have family music and dance for adults and kids, and will be hosting a weekend-long community residency featuring Afro-Latin jazz and soul in downtown Pittsfield.

Upcoming Programs

While there are some workshops and classes currently going on at the Pillow, June 21st is the official season opening Gala. Live music, a cocktail party, dinner, an auction and dancing under the stars. The season begins in earnest toward the end of June with trio of outstanding artists demonstrating dance styles from urban America, Indonesia, and West Africa. Visit their website to learn more about the upcoming calendar, see prior works of art, listen to artist podcasts, and more. At the beginning of July, the Pillow will be reopening their Doris Duke Theater with a week of special events, performances, discussions and tours. With three separate stages and theaters, Jacobs Pillow offers a myriad of reasons to come back again and again.
