Warm July evenings are perfect for live music in the Berkshires. Of all the potential venues to see performance art in Western Mass, Tanglewood is one of the best known and most revered. Everybody who is anybody has played there over the last 90 years, since their initial opening in the 1930’s. From annual Summer residencies by the Boston Symphony to some of rock, jazz, and folk’s biggest stars, the Shed at Tanglewood is a cultural landmark of New England. Whether you’re in a chair under the canopy or on a blanket under the stars, Tanglewood is THE place for summer music.
New England Icons
Each year over a quarter of a million music and arts fans descent upon Tanglewood Music Center to see performances of everything from Beethoven and Mozart to Jon Batiste and Bare Naked Ladies. The ambience and atmosphere of the pavilion in the hills of Lenox inspires many artists and performers to come back year after year. This 4th of July weekend, on Thursday and Friday, New England native and American music icon James Taylor will be doing his annual summer shows. An event not to be missed, to be sure. For fans of his music – and we all know at least a few JT tunes – this is the most intimate and personal way to enjoy his distinctive singing and songwriting.
Season Opening Weekend
Although jazz-pop great Jon Batiste graced the Shed with his eclectic blend of music and style, Tanglewood opens for real this weekend. Two sold out shows of American songwriter extraordinaire, James Taylor on Thursday and Friday, then majestic performances by the Boston Symphony on Saturday and Sunday. An evening of Rachmaninoff begins the symphonic season on Saturday, while the orchestra plays Beethoven’s eternal 5th Symphony and his breathtaking Piano Concerto #3 on Sunday afternoon. Quite a weekend. A double header from one of America’s greatest living singer-songwriters, followed by divine piano works from Europe, and one of the world’s most recognizable compositions from arguably the greatest music writer of all time. Not bad for the quiet corner of the Commonwealth.
